Bruegger's Adds Three Bakeries in Ohio

Fast Casual Bakery Targets Columbus, Dublin and Upper Arlington

(COLUMBUS, OH) – Bruegger’s, the country’s first national bagel bakery concept, looks to expand with three new bakeries in the Columbus area, including one currently under construction in Dublin at The Shoppes at River Ridge and on the campus of Ohio State, later next year.

The Dublin location is slated to open by December 2007.  Bruegger’s franchisee, North Coast Bakeries, Inc., will create more than 40 – 50 jobs for the community and the university with the three new locations.

Mike Salcone, partner in North Coast Bakeries with his wife Deborah, decided to get into the food business after 20 years in the insurance industry.  They became interested in becoming Bruegger’s franchisees after a long time friend mentioned that he was a big fan of the bagel bakery.  He called the company headquarters in Burlington, Vermont, the next day.

“In my opinion, Bruegger’s food is hard to beat with its superior menu offerings, multiple day parts and hometown appeal,” said Salcone, a Malone College business graduate and insurance field sales manager of more than 20 years.  “I have spent most of my career doing small business consulting, and after I called Bruegger’s that day, I knew we could quickly reap what we plan to sow in this community and in this company.”

Bruegger’s, currently in its 25th year, and franchising for 15, has been awarded for the service and appeal in the industry that attracted the Salcone’s, including:

  • Number 1 in Category 2006 and 2007, Entrepreneur Franchise 500
  • Top 50 Award 2006, Franchise Business News
  • Number 28 2006, Fast Casual Top 100
  • Best in Drive-Thru 2006, QSR
  • 13 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth

“Deborah and Mike are exactly the type of people we want as part of our successful franchising program,” said Chris Cheek, vice president of franchise development for Bruegger’s.  “They know the community, love the business model and plan to make it work, not only for their guests but also for the community.”
