Bruegger's Enterprises, Inc. Announces 2005 Fourth Quarter and Full Year Sales
Bakery-cafe chain reports strongest same store growth in six years;
Completes renovations to all company-owned units
BURLINGTON, Vt. (February 13, 2006) - Bruegger's Enterprises today announced that fourth quarter revenue for comparable sales grew 6.8 percent at company locations and 4.9 percent system wide. For the 2005 fiscal year, same store sales increased 2.8 percent for the company and 2.3 percent for the system. Bruegger's gross sales reached $155 million in 2005.
This is the seventh consecutive quarter of comparable restaurant sales growth for Bruegger's. The fourth quarter in fiscal 2005 also marked the most financially successful quarter in company history. Guest check average for the year rose to $5.25.
"Consistently introducing new menu items, a reduction in operating costs, a focus on guest service and significant franchise growth have all contributed to deliver positive sales and profitability for Bruegger's," said Bruegger's CEO James Greco. "We are pleased that throughout 2005, Bruegger's continued to gain growth in all of our markets."
Greco also added that 2005 marked the culmination of many initiatives the company started nearly two years ago. "We completed the renovations to all of our company-owned bakeries and our guests have responded favorably as our financial results show. In addition, we have focused our marketing and advertising to build a stronger connection to our guests."
2005 marked a significant year of franchise growth for Bruegger's. "Implementing our strategic plan for franchise growth allowed us to secure development agreements with eight new franchise groups. We renewed our franchise recruitment efforts in late 2004 and have received tremendous response resulting in commitments for 43 new bakeries. Our franchise program will be an integral part of expanding the Bruegger's brand," said Greco.
During the 2005 fiscal year, Bruegger's operated a total of 242 bakery-cafes, opened a total of four new bakeries and completed renovations to 137 company-owned units. Encouraged by a return on investment, many of Bruegger's franchise groups are following suit and plan to renovate their bakeries.
Bruegger's forecasts the development of approximately 70 Bruegger's bakeries between 2006 and year-end 2007, consisting of approximately 20 new company-owned locations and approximately 50 new franchised locations. Bruegger's is currently seeking qualified franchise partners in select U.S. markets.
